The 2022 Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is no longer the only gaming machine in its class. It’s still an attractive 14-inch gaming machine.The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 was first released last year. We were impressed by its 14-inch display, Asus Rog Zephyrus G14 Black Friday Deals 2022 which is rare in gaming laptops, and Nvidia GeForce RTX20-Series power. It also has AMD Ryzen processing. The 2022 G14, which starts at $1,549.99, has the same design but features the RTX 30-Series processors and Ryzen 5000 chips. The $1,999 unit we tested also included a 1440p screen and 32GB memory. While the price is not as high as the original G14 but it is still a great deal, the entry-level configuration (which still has an RTX 3060) remains attractive. Also, the market for 14-inch gaming laptops has expanded: Competing 14-inchers are now popping up from most of the usual suspects (the Razer Blade 14 is our top pick), making the G14 less of a unicorn.
This new model is still an excellent package. The original Zephyrus G14, a 14-inch gaming laptop, was renowned for its size and performance. As this is primarily a component upgrade, the exterior design remains unchanged. We won’t spend too much on that aspect. I should note that we also recently checked out a very different version of this laptop, the G14 Alan Walker Edition (geared toward fans of the European electronic music star), but will concentrate here on this more standard entry for the main review and performance testing. We still need to understand the basics, so let us go over them.

The laptop is a compact gaming laptop that measures in at 0.7 inches by 12.75 by 8.7 and weighs in at 3.5 pounds. It is attractive due to its quality materials and stylish white/silver design. The AniMe Matrix lid is also included in this unit. We previously tested it as an option to the original G14. You can add effects and images to the lid by inlaying a grid of LEDs. (Check out our original hands-on with the AniMe Matrix for more detail.) Although the original G14 was small at launch, 14-inch gaming machines are becoming more popular. The Razer Blade 14 and the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE roughly match its thinness and footprint, though the G14 is the lightest of the three. The G14 isn’t the only gaming laptop that occupies this much space. However, it is still one of the most portable gaming laptops. It is important to remember that the laptop does not have a webcam. Frequent remote video chatters will need to look elsewhere.

Asus believed that streamers and gamers would be more interested in a high-performance webcam to keep costs down. Let’s now look at the components and features of this particular model. The GeForce RTX 30-Series g14 is available in a variety of flavors, but the price for our test unit was $1,999. You get the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS processor and 32GB memory. The GeForce GTX 3060 GPU is included. A 1TB SSD is also included. It also has a native resolution of 2,560-by-1.440 pixels and a peak refresh rate of 120Hz. We liked the original G14 for its value. However, the price for this configuration is significantly higher. This is partly due to the RTX 30-Series’s upgrade to the RTX 16GB to 32GB memory, and the resolution to 1440p (from 1080p) display.
The new display looks fantastic and is crisp. It’s also great for gaming and entertainment, provided you have the right hardware. More details below. This is not to suggest that these upgrades are not worth the extra cost. However, the G14 has been moved into the top tier of gaming laptops and not the midrange. The “value” part of this configuration is somewhat lost. The G14 RTX 30-Series models may not be as costly; at the time of writing, a Best Buy configuration was $1,549.99. It has the same CPU, GPU and storage, but 16GB of memory, and a full HD (1080p), which is closer to the original G14. We ran benchmark tests on the G14 to gauge their performance and then compared them with a selection of laptops. Below is a table listing their specifications. PCMark 10, the main benchmark, simulates a range of real-world productivity workflows and content-creation workflows in order to assess overall performance for office-centric tasks like word processing, spreadsheeting and web browsing. Gaming laptops were originally designed to replace desktops in their early years. The 2011 Razer Blade was nearly seven pounds. The 2012 Blade was 6.6. The battery life was laughable. (The 2017 Zephyrus had just over two hours.) Gaming laptops looked bulky and garish. These laptops were not meant for gamers on the move, but for gaming on a tight budget.
The age of ultraportables is upon us. A 2.01-pound laptop has six cores and weighs in at 3.3 pounds. A 5-pound laptop is heavy.
