The Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 is a significant investment by Bose. The company was the market leader for many years. However, it has been challenged by Sony’s 1000X-series Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 Black Friday Deals 2021 headphones over the past few years. In fact, the 1000XM3s have finally beaten the Bose QuietComfort 35 II headphones. Many people also prefer the sound quality of the Sonys. Bose’s NCH 700s are a breakthrough in headphone design. The result is a modern design that doesn’t include visible screws or hinges, which is a far cry from the QC35s’ industrial design in the 2000s. The foundation of the whole thing is a stainless steel headband. It runs down and shrinks to a cylindrical shape that cuts through each earcup. Adjust the fit by moving the steel pole between your earcups. The movement is smooth and doesn’t give any feedback or clicks. My head is large so the fit is easy. I simply put on the headphones and push the earcups as far as I can. Some people may not like the clicky slider design of other headphones.
The silicone texture of the foam cushioning between your head, the metal headband and the Alcantara fabric is different from the QC35s. There’s also more silicone at the top. The NCH 700s weigh 0.56 lbs, which is less than the QC35s (0.518 lb). However, they are still extremely comfortable. The synthetic leather ear pads feel amazing. Some early buyers complained about the tight clamping force of the head, but I never had that experience. I also didn’t feel any discomfort during prolonged use. Some people have complained that the headband can be heard against the earcups, which are and not made from metal. However, this is an issue I didn’t notice. Perhaps both are more problematic for those with smaller noggins. I think the QC35 IIs still win out at overall comfort, but these are easily on par with Sony’s 1000XM3s.

Audio is controlled by the frontal earcup. There are no buttons. Instead, the right earcup’s front half recognizes your swipes and taps. These headphones are not foldable, so they can’t be folded away. Earcups that are flat-swivel when placed in a carrying case are the best. Sony’s 1000XM3s fold down, but Surface Headphones and other rivals are also available. I found that Bose’s included hard case still fit perfectly fine in my backpack, and there’s a handy little compartment that holds the USB-C charging cable and 2.5mm-to-3.5mm headphone cable.
Bose has discontinued the physical buttons that control your music on its 700s, following the current trends in over-ear headphones design. The right earcup’s front half can sense your index finger’s swipes and taps. This system works well once you have muscle memory and know where to find it. To play or pause, tap twice, swipe up to increase the volume, down for lower, forward or back to go to the previous song, and tap again to pause. Double-taps answer calls. Tap and hold rejects incoming calls. To see the remaining battery life, you can press down on the touch screen (in hours and not in percentage).

The NCH 700s are compatible with Bose’s audio-based augmented reality platform, Bose AR. This allows you to hear 3D sound and see sounds change as you move your head. Bose AR is available in several apps that you can download from the Bose Music app, including a fitness app and a navigation app which shows you nearby points of interest while you’re walking around a city. The feature is still in beta and will not be discussed in this review.
Sony ran into some problems with its earpad controls, which can behave erratically in cold weather. Bose confirmed that the NCH700s had been thoroughly tested. He also reminded me that the company is based in Framingham MA, which can get very cold in winter. This is the middle of summer in New York so I won’t be able to determine if these headphones are better than Sony’s. They’ll be more trouble if you wear gloves than Bose’s older models.
There are still a few buttons on the back. The one on the left earcup adjusts noise cancellation. On the right earcup, there is a power/Bluetooth pairing and activation button. These buttons activate immediately after you press them accidentally, which is a small problem. This could be avoided by implementing a delay of a split second to prevent frustration from occurring with false pressings.
Bose supports all three major voice-assistants: Siri (on iOS), Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa (on both Android & iOS). You have the option to receive proactive voice notifications. This means that your messages and any other important alerts are read to you right away. Amazon gets another point. Alexa can be accessed by saying “Alexa” instead of pressing a button. The NCH 700s do not support “Hey Siri” and “OK Google” activation phrases. Alexa’s utility is limited on headphones. Although you can control volume and adjust the smart home equipment, as well as ask Alexa questions, commands such “next song” and “skip this particular track” won’t work. Siri was my main choice and it worked well. The impressive microphones made it a lot easier to recognize the song and track.
You can pair two devices with the Bose NCH700s and connect them simultaneously. This allows you to listen to audio on your tablet or laptop from both of them while they are connected.
