When it first appeared on the market, in 2013, the original Sonos Playbar was an outstanding product. However, it’s not the most expensive Atmos soundbars available today. Both the Vizio SB36512F6 and Sony HT-G700 are less expensive and have a second HDMI input and a subwoofer. The Sennheiser Ambeo is three times more expensive than the Arc, but it’s an all-in-one Atmos “bar”.

The Arc measures 45 inches in width, 3.4 inches high and 4.5 inches deep. You can choose from black or white for the curvaceous cabinet. It looks and feels premium, with touch-based controls and a mesh grill. There are eight elliptical drivers, three silk-dome tweeters, and upfiring drivers for Dolby atmos effects.
To better hear voice commands, the Arc features a four-farfield microphone array. While I was able to test the Sonos with the beta version of the Sonos software I couldn’t get Google Assistant to work, Amazon Alexa worked perfectly. Although the speaker couldn’t hear me shouting, it was able listen to normal music and my voice. It is comparable to other smart speakers in terms of listening performance. The Apple HomePod was the best I have tested.
