One thing you can say about Sony’s digital camera business is that they have experimented with many different ideas. They also feature XGA electronic viewfinders and tilting LCDs. Weatherproof bodies are similar to the Olympus E-M1. Sony needed to develop new lenses that would take full advantage of the full frame sensors. They’ll be called ‘FE-series,’ as you might expect. To start, five lenses were revealed (listed below), and ten more are expected by 2015. E-mount lenses that are already in use will still work. However, the image will be cropped if necessary.
You may have A-mount lenses lying around that will work as long as you get one of Sony’s full frame-ready adapters (the LA EA3 or LA EA4). The a7 has a 24.3 megapixel CMOS sensor that includes a low pass filter and on-chip phase detection. The hybrid AF is said to speed up AF and support the camera’s ability of shooting at 5 fps with continuous focus. The more expensive a7R has a 36-megapixel sensor and no optical low-pass filter. It also features a conventional contrast-detect system. The a7 and a7R both record video at 1080/60p or 24p with manual exposure control, mic and headphone ports, and an audio meter. Bionz X Processor Bionz X is the latest processor from the company. It is significantly faster than the previous generation and allows for more advanced processing, according to the company. Sony is not being specific but touts the new processor’s ‘Detail Reproduction Technology’, which is a subtler and more sophisticated sharpening system.

The company claims that the new processor will have a less obvious emphasis on edges and give a more convincing representation for fine detail. Bionz X promises another function: “Diffraction Reduction”. This is where the camera’s processing attempts correct for softness due to diffraction when you reduce a lens’ aperture. This processing, which is presumably aperture dependent, sounds very similar to Fujifilm’s Lens Modulation Optimization (introduced on X100S), and we can expect it to become more common across brands over the next few months. Sony claims that the Bionz X chip provides a more advanced version its context-sensitive, area-specific noise cancellation’. This attempts to determine whether an area of an image is smooth, textured, or subject edges, and then apply different levels of noise reduction. We’ll be discussing the benefits and potential problems this system can cause later in the review.
Lenses The a7’s E-mount can be used, but you will need to use Sony’s FE-series lenses in order to make full use of the full-frame sensor. E-mount lenses that are still available will fit. However, they can’t be used with APS-C sensors. This means their image circles won’t cover the entire frame as well (just like Sony’s DT lenses for full-frame Alpha-mount cameras). Five FE lenses were revealed at launch. However, not all were available at ‘press-time’. The 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS will be sold only as a kit lens to the a7. The lenses are all weather-sealed. However, the primes and zooms have optical stabilization. Sony’s strategy is a little surprising to us. It seems odd that they have two standard zooms, instead of adding a wide-angle one. It’s nice to have a few primes.
However, they both seem a bit slow considering their price. The 55mm F1.8 lens is too long for a normal lens. Sony may soon offer a fast portrait lens for the 85-135mm range. We would love to have seen one sooner, but we are hopeful. Both cameras can use existing E-mount or A-mount lenses. You also have the option to crop the image. The a7 will have a resolution of 10 megapixels, while the equivalent focal length will be 1.5x. Sony offers the option of not cropping and using the entire sensor. However, this can lead to strong vignetting. If you have it turned Off, Image 1 will be displayed with a full frame lens and Image 2 if using an APS–C lens. Depending on whether you are using an APS-C or full-frame lens, Image 1 will be displayed and Image 3 will be displayed. Finally, it will turn on Image 3 regardless of the type of lens you used. Sony’s A Mount lenses require an adapter for A-to-E-mount.

Sony currently offers four adapters for A-to E-mount lenses. These adapters are somewhat confusing in that they differ in their autofocus capabilities as well as the format coverage.
