The BOSS technology is a floating-lens unit which moves to compensate for your hand movements. It produces far more steady footage than the electronic image stabilisation used by competitors like the GoPro HD Hero 5 Black.
The image stabilisation is entirely mechanical and not done in software. It even works when shooting 4K with the FDR-X1000V Action Cam.
The FDR-X3000 action camera is priced at PS500. However, with its incredible still images quality and stable footage, it is a great choice for travellers as well as adrenaline junkies.
The FDR-X3000’s design is consistent with previous action cameras from Sony, such as the HDR-AS50 Action Cam. Sony’s action cameras are not a “me too” rectangular camera like the GoPro. They have always looked more like little camcorders.
Although I have said before that I like the design of Sony’s action camera because it is ergonomic for hand-holding, the FDR-X3000 has optical image stabilisation which is more important than ever. This allows you to take video even while walking, without worrying.
The FDR-X3000, like the FDRX1000V before it is also available in glossy white. It weighs 114g, including the battery and body, which is remarkable considering the image stabilisation technology.

Although the camera’s body is IPX4 water-resistant (splash-proof), you will need to put it in its waterproof case if you plan to use it underwater. The waterproof case adds water and dust resistance to the camera, and increases its overall size to 60m. The FDR-X3000 ($399.99), the top-end model, offers optical image stabilization. This is something that you can’t get with our Editors’ Choice Hero5 Black. Its video quality is excellent, with 100Mbps 4K footage looking great. However, the absence of an integrated LCD viewfinder and non-traditional format factor keep it from being as good as it could be. This is a great alternative to the GoPro, but it’s not as compact or easy to use as the Hero5 Black.
The FDRX3000 (Amazon: $598.00) is a revolutionary action cam design. The majority of action cams follow the GoPro design, which is a small box with a lens. However, the X3000 is more compact. It is 1.9 inches by 1.2 inches by 3.4 inches (HWD), and weighs in at 4.1 ounces. The white body is protected against dust and splashes. However, it cannot be submerged without the provided underwater housing. The housing can be submerged to a depth of approximately 200 feet (60 metres).
Sony’s approach to things is not good or bad. It’s just different. The X3000’s shape may not be right for your workflow. It simply cannot fit in some tight spots as well as a Hero5 BLACK. You may also appreciate the standard tripod mount that is included on the external housing and body. This means you don’t need to buy a lot of additional mounts. You can use your existing GoPro mounts, but you will need to purchase a small adapter.
The FDRX3000R also makes it possible to create a Wi-Fi Direct network that a phone can join. This brings in PlayMemories Mobile, which is a similar remote-operating/preview-capable application. You can also enjoy live streaming and some editing software.
Two video formats are supported by the FDR-X3000R: MP4 and XAVCS. The first can shoot 4K at 30fps at 60mbps or 100mbps while the latter can record Full HD at 30fps when in HQ mode.

Two microphones are located under the lens at the front. On the undercarriage, a standard tripod thread is found and a microSD slot. Sony recommends a SDXC/SDHC 10 card for XAVC S recording and a SDXC/SDHC 3-class for 4K 100Mbps recording. You can’t make 4K recordings without one, nor can you take photos without one.
The Live View remote (RM–LVR3) is included in the box. It automatically detects and connects to the FDR-X3000R once it’s turned on. However, during our tests, it took 30 seconds to relink and re-awaken a real live view. The phone app works much better than the remote. We could not find any solution or explanation for the unreliability.
It’s a shame, as the camera promises real usability and comes with a bunch accessories (a wristband, mount adapter, and a charger cradle) and add-ons (AKA FGP1 and VCT-HM2). The FDR-X3000R can be operated with one hand thanks to the finger grip.
The live view remote tilts when placed on top. However, there is one problem with this mini-rig setup: every button pressed on the remote causes noticeable juddering in the video. Attaching the remote to cam misses the point, even though the finger grip allows for smoother pans. The tripod mount is covered by the transparent plastic housing of the finger grip, making it difficult to swap between stationary shots quickly.
The small rubber lens cap is included in the box along with the finger grip. This is an extremely useful accessory that we always marvel at why action cameras don’t include. Sony also makes a small rubber lens cap that can be used as an accessory. This is for use with the FDR-3000R on a motorbike or any other vehicle with a vibrating motor. You can record your adventures with the ultra-wide-angle lens. The included underwater housing, which is waterproof to 197′, allows you to explore the depths of the ocean.
The FDR-X3000 uses the XAVC S Codec to record UltraHD resolution 4K (3840 x 22160 pixels) at 30p, 24p and bit-rates 100 Mb/s or sixty Mb/s. It can also record Full HD 1080p at 50Mb/s using XAVC S, and up to 28Mb/s with the higher-compressed MP4 format.
Recording High-Frame Rate
The FDR-X3000 can record high-frame rates videos and is great for dramatic portrayals of action scenes in 1080p or 720p resolutions. Full HD 1080p video can also be recorded at 120fps. This allows for 1/4-speed playback at 30fps. You can also reduce to 720p resolution and record at 240fps for 1/4-speed playback of 60fps or 1/8 speed at 30fps.
Balanced, Built-In Optical SteadyShot
Balanced Optical SteadyShot, or B.O.S.S. for short, was originally developed for Sony’s HandyCam range. It doesn’t compromise the camera’s full recording capabilities. The lens moves to reduce motion artifacts, and allows for smoother, sharper videos.
Wi-Fi Remote Monitoring and Operation
PlayMemories Mobile (PMM), allows you to remotely control up five Action Cams using a single smartphone. You can view the live feed directly from the camera. The multi-view feature allows you to see up to five cameras simultaneously, or you can just view one.Highlight Movie Maker
